Points & Miles Without the Overwhelm
You don’t need 15 credit cards, a spreadsheet full of airline programs or a PhD in travel hacking to start traveling with points.
I use points and miles as one of the tools that helps my family take better vacations for less — especially when it comes to flights and nicer hotel stays.
Here’s how I’d start if I were beginning today.
Three Things I’d Do First
Learn the Basics
Start by understanding what points are, how they work and how families can actually use them for real vacations.

I share real trips, hotel stays and examples of when I use points versus when paying cash makes more sense.

Once you start earning rewards, having one place to track cards, points, offers and benefits makes the whole process easier.

Using points isn’t automatically a good deal.
Sometimes I find an incredible redemption that lets us stay somewhere I wouldn’t want to pay full price for. Other times, the cash rate is good enough that I’d rather save the points for another trip.
My goal isn’t to collect the most points possible. It’s to use them strategically to help my family take the vacations we actually want.

If you use rewards credit cards, keeping track of benefits, offers, points and annual fees can get confusing quickly.
I use MaxRewards to keep my cards, rewards, offers and benefits organized in one place — so I can actually remember to use them.

Credit cards can be one of the fastest ways to earn travel rewards, but the “best” card depends on your travel goals, spending habits and the type of trips you want to take.
I don’t think everyone needs a wallet full of cards. I’d rather start with a clear travel goal and choose a strategy around that.
Important: I only recommend using rewards credit cards if you can pay your balance in full and would otherwise be making those purchases anyway. Paying interest can quickly erase the value of any travel rewards you earn.
I’ll be adding more about the cards and rewards programs I personally use as I continue building out this resource.
